The Cape Mazaar Society, established 21 years ago, took a bold historical stride in launching its first video production of the 265 Urs celebration of Sheigh Abdurahman Matura (RA) who lies buried on Robben Island.
This full length documentary contains all the elements of the procedures of the Urs, which includes the Khalifa display (Ratieb), the Gyarwee Shareef and Sandal, Naat Shareef recitals and Quawali. Of great significance to this production is the historic key-note address by the Premier of the Western Cape, Minister Ebrahim Rassool, who emphasised the importance of the upkeep of the traditions of the Muslims towards their spiritual leaders.
This years Urs attendance exceeded all expectations, but because of capacity and logistics of the availability of boats, the society still managed to get about 600 people across to the Island.
However, because of these limitations, the attendance of ladies is not encouraged. With the production of this video, the Society hopes to bring the joy of the Urs at Robben Island into the homes of the keen lovers of Urs.
The DVD’s or VHS format tapes and books are available from the Society - e-mail info@capemazaarsociety.com or Tel: (021) 699 0500 (o/h)
